In lieu of attending the Spring District Camporee for 2005, Troop 400 planned a camping trip to Blue Mountain Lake to climb Blue Mountain and visit the Adirondack Museum. Unfortunately, the museum didn't open until Memorial Day weekend, and the camping part of the trip ended up being more work than it would be worth, so instead, Troop 400 took a day trip to Blue Mountain on Saturday, May 22nd, 2005. Attendance was suprisingly low, even though the event was open to all Scouts in the troop.
The sun was out for the whole drive up to Old Forge and McDonalds (where service was indescribably slow), but once we were on the trail, the sun traded off with short stints of rain and overcast skies. Overall, the weather wasn't bad, and we had a good hike.
The top of Blue Mountain is unique. Blue Mountain is not one of the 46 Adirondack High Peaks, so there are no laws banning construction or use of power tools; thus, at the top we found an abandoned cabin and decommissioned ranger tower, along with a radio tower, and, slightly off the peak, a much larger cell phone tower (which explained the great cell reception all the way up the mountain).
