One of the best parts of camp is unique to Troop 400. Every year, our troop constructs a massive hourglass-shaped pioneering tower in the Tanglebush Commissioner's Area at Sabattis. Troop 400 is the only troop with the expertise and permission to take on this task, and every year, we build our tours a little bigger. Full beach trees are felled with axes by Troop 400's own scouts, and then dragged back to the construction site.
The basic frame of the tower is made out of a tripod with poles 10 inches in diameter. The entire troop is needed to lift these poles off the ground and erect a structure which will eventually stand 30 to 40 feet into the air. A second tripod is raised up through the center of the first, creating the distinctive 'hourglass' shape. Needless to say, knowledge of lashing and knots are extremely important for this activity. Scouts are encouraged to practice lashing outside of the regular instruction at troop meetings, so that they are fully equipped to help with the pioneering tower at summer camp.
